One of my big shocks was to learn from a friend who attended [Ivy League uni] that no one is ever kicked out even if they don't study bc that would ruin the uni's ratings. So basically you get accepted, your'e good.
Top-tier schools have been using & discarding high school kids for ages, advertising to students w/ low admittance odds to beef up rejection rates & boost USNWR rank. "Acceptance letter" isn't quite parsed as a qualification yet, but I know people who've deliberately attended one semester and then left because, in the right circles, "Stanford dropout" signals 80% of what "Stanford graduate" does.
