Top-tier schools have been using & discarding high school kids for ages, advertising to students w/ low admittance odds to beef up rejection rates & boost USNWR rank. The tables might turn soon: top-tier students using acceptance letters to get ahead, forgoing the $200k educationhttps://twitter.com/Austen/status/1112753949914726401 …

In my inbox: people considering dropping out of HBS, Stanford to go to Lambda School. Yes, even HBS and Stanford. Why? Insane amounts of debt. If prices of college (even top programs) don’t start dropping there will be a reckoning.

One of my big shocks was to learn from a friend who attended [Ivy League uni] that no one is ever kicked out even if they don't study bc that would ruin the uni's ratings. So basically you get accepted, your'e good.

Are there LinkedIn profiles with "accepted but did not attend" in the education section yet? That will be the real evidence.

I'd like to see a variant of 'Thiel Fellowships' that are not an offer to best-of-best (yet another level of selectivity), but a randomized experiment on those admitted but willing to accept a bribe to forgo enrollment in any selective schoolhttps://twitter.com/gojomo/status/1110307244703272965 …

@paulg a possible strong metric for college-as-a-whole might be possible from a randomized & compliance-incentivized version of Thiel Fellowship. EG: for a set of college admittees, ask them for a $ number they would agree to take to never attend college; …

An acceptance letter probably holds a large % of the value added from attending a top university. I can't wait for the market to tell us how big that % is.

"Acceptance letter" isn't quite parsed as a qualification yet, but I know people who've deliberately attended one semester and then left because, in the right circles, "Stanford dropout" signals 80% of what "Stanford graduate" does.

Funny how "Stanford" can be an adjective or adverb. "to drop out, Stanfordly"
