This probably works best for something like history where the outlines of all the books match. Easier to say "Everyone read up to the Battle of Agincourt". Harder if everyone is learning a different facet every week.
Nope, artificially enforced homogeneity of knowledge is exactly what I'm trying to avoid

I see the value in the idea. But what do you talk about every week? Without logical sync points, it's just a discussion group not a book club. If you pick voracious readers sync points could just be whole books.

"Discussion group where everyone has very recently read something substantive on the subject at hand" is less catchy than "book club"
