A lot of people are assuming she's talking about her own life, but I didn't read it that way. I thought she was talking about how people who grew up in her age bracket have viewed the state of the country as a whole, in their lifetimes.

I saw it as a reference to the end of “unlimited American prosperity” — the “death of the American Dream.” Young people no longer believe that studying and working hard gets you a good job, and with good reason. That’s what I think she meant.

If she's not talking about a group inclusive of the two of them, holy f*** the fruit roll-up talk is manipulative.

I think she is talking about a group inclusive of the two of them, but that entire group hasn't "experienced American prosperity" in the sense of experienced living in a country on the rise the way we were in the 50's

... Yeah, in the context of her article it's even clearer; she's saying an entire generation hasn't experienced American prosperity (which pretty clearly can't mean "no individuals in my generation are wealthy") https://twitter.com/CharlotteAlter/status/1109112225556504576 …

(I guess it's possible she's claiming to be poor herself, that just seems less likely to me)

Oh, I absolutely believe that either or both of these people could believe that they are less wealthy than they deserve to be

She does say in the following sentence that she's never experienced American prosperity in her adult life. It's surprising to me that she would say that, given her background & current status.

I’m not sure how much Julia and I actually disagree; I don’t think they’re claiming to be *objectively* poor, but I do think the central idea is that in some prior generation they would be better off. It’s wrong but smart; Trump won on the same message, minus the socialism — MAGA

Sure, "experiencing prosperity" can be different from being wealthy, but it is misleading in a way that reinforces the political payload of the message: something else is to blame for millennial feelings of failure.

Its strange how they seem to be defining prosperity as "rate of economic growth", like, sure the 50's and 60's had some pretty impressive growth, but you would have rather lived then than now?
