I saw it as a reference to the end of “unlimited American prosperity” — the “death of the American Dream.” Young people no longer believe that studying and working hard gets you a good job, and with good reason. That’s what I think she meant.

I think she is talking about a group inclusive of the two of them, but that entire group hasn't "experienced American prosperity" in the sense of experienced living in a country on the rise the way we were in the 50's

I thought it was meant to place their childhoods in a historical context: “What was popular when we were kids? Dunkaroos and Fruit Roll-ups.” Does anyone think Fruit Roll-ups implies poverty? Were rich kids eating caviar?
