No comment on the two individuals, and obviously people are better off now than in the 19th century, but if one's life is experienced as primarily suffering/stress I dont think relative wealth matters much. I agree with your primary thrust, but I think there is another side to it
I dont think its an unfair reading - of course "people" is wrong, its just "some of the people", but rhetoric will rhetoric. I still think "our prosperity hasn't translated to actual happiness for many for decades" is a defensible statement, aligns with hers, and opposes yours?
