I think this underplays the impact cost disease can have - once you approach the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, the lack of affordability of housing and healthcare can be all-consuming. And the modern world does not permit you to say "screw it" and go forage.

No comment on the two individuals, and obviously people are better off now than in the 19th century, but if one's life is experienced as primarily suffering/stress I dont think relative wealth matters much. I agree with your primary thrust, but I think there is another side to it

My take is that the disease is not the cost or who pays but that neither system provides what it should. Healthcare does not deliver heath. Education does not deliver useful information. If the population is healthy the costs plummet and an individual catastrophic policy

US Education and Healthcare cost too much due to subsidization. Fed student loans drive up demand. Medicare, Medicaid, and Mandatory Employer Health Insurance drive up demand. Increase demand -> Increase Cost. Housing more of a lack of supply issue.
