Neither of these are true for me although $CURRENT_CITY is a big improvement over $HOMETOWN. Still, the most common advice I’ve gotten since college is “take it easy”, “don’t take on more than you have to”, “I think you’re aiming higher than you can reach”, and “that was lucky”.
Fight ferociously for your life, knowing that at various points you will probably look to “prove them right.” Risk-tolerance is a stupidly well-rewarded trait right now, though possibly highly contingent on courage

"Proving people right" can act as a distraction though - and most of the time they won't care anyway. Aiming for fun/doing interesting things as opposed to success is another justifying strategy that sometimes works well.
