This must be one of those “different worlds” cases. Even when I used to say I was doing freelance journalism (and I had no track record) it was still pretty rare to hear the kinds of criticism you describe. Most ppl were just like “Cool, good for you” (outwardly, anyway)

Somewhat related is “bozo hiring,” whereby managers select for stable, predictable intellects just beneath their own (as a means of self-protection when promotions roll around), thus creating a hierarchy of nitwits with several layers of straight-up desk-droolers at the bottom
