Neither of these are true for me although $CURRENT_CITY is a big improvement over $HOMETOWN. Still, the most common advice I’ve gotten since college is “take it easy”, “don’t take on more than you have to”, “I think you’re aiming higher than you can reach”, and “that was lucky”.

It's hard to say about my hometown - it was in my neighborhood, but the majority of the town's population is heavily religious and probably less pro-unconventionality.

Depends on how broadly you want to scope “conventional”. Lots of nonconventional stuff across the US is pretty conventional around Silicon Valley — and vice versa, unfortunately
