Slightly different take: I grew up in an area where these types of success simply didn’t occur, mostly due to lack of access to opportunity. There was always a sort of ingrained assumption that success was happening somewhere else, so doubting it in others was a natural response.
This was my experience in Missouri — if you’re here, you ain’t it, kid, and if you think you’re getting out of here, do you really think you’re better than the rest of us?

Exactly. Tourism and rich, famous people with summer homes was also a thing, which exacerbated the feeling that successful people always came from somewhere else (might as well have been a different planet).
