That's the lie. Wanting is not greed. Wanting is only greed when the prize is intractably zero-sum, and such prizes evaporate as humanity casts off its self-loathing & gradually understands itself in the context of its own extraordinary generative powerhttps://twitter.com/mattlarraz/status/1108766914950512640 …

The devil's name is Pessimism, and he's taking names. The bargain is disempowerment for entitlement. Just don't want too much. Stay in your lane, like everyone else. It's only fair. If you defect, do you think anyone will help you? You're weak and the woods are full of monsterspic.twitter.com/KVEMFs8rTH

It's too bad that the Harry Potter franchise went a bit off the rails, because the Obscurial concept is brilliant https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Obscurial pic.twitter.com/bESLZagXnT

Ok but then don't be surprised if you get consumed by anxiety as you slowly realize that you've been chasing a mirage. This is dangerously one-sided advice.

If you think it's dangerous to tell people to not be ashamed of wanting things, not much else here will click. Bad things happen to good people while they're trying to do real things. People don't always get what they want. The alternative is an intolerable cultural agorophobia.

To this I would add: don't apologize for being weird. In other words, don't apologize for wanting something new, different, or off the list of things everyone has pre-decided is ok to want.

Huh. My impression of modern culture is one of endless obsessive wanting, far more than in past generations seemingly. And I have found my lack of obsessive desire quite wonderfully freeing; if you have many possible routes to joy, you get more joy and less frustration.

Yeah, don't apologize. But it's reasonable to question whether all the gripping and grasping one does is the most direct route to happiness and fulfillment. (Not sure about the "integral to the grand human project" stuff - sounds keen but unclear what it means practically.)
