Yeah, don't apologize. But it's reasonable to question whether all the gripping and grasping one does is the most direct route to happiness and fulfillment. (Not sure about the "integral to the grand human project" stuff - sounds keen but unclear what it means practically.)
i think the problem is that people want (and receive) pointless, frivolous shit that damages the world and makes the "grand human project" much more difficult to achieve
God yeah, 90s pop environmentalism was largely 'use less X and feel morally superior about it). I still have trouble using paper towels. That said, wanting is often a wasting memetic desire whose distraction from more permanent goals is the issue, not the externalities.
I'll welcome the wanting, the materialism, the greed any day. That I understand, it's rational. But not by those who seek it parasitically.
We're all sentient beings stuck in ape bodies. Who can say what we might become when our "generative power" gives us the tech to change our preferences (including wants). It is totally unclear to me which set of these common platitudes maps onto a future that is "good".
