This meme is pretty well seeded into pop culture already. Only engineering students are stereotyped as having to work hard

Well, it tells us that classes are pretty much equally hard and equally well taught at most universities. But what it doesnt tell is the benefits of big name universities: labs, research, alumni connections. And some selection process is needed, the debate is what it should be.
It's the reason you get the most research scientists from big universities and not liberal arts colleges, which have better classes. Some amount of it is bias towards bigger universities for grad student hiring, but some of it is the lack of infrastructure and grad students.
A watered down standardized test that does some minor weeding out is surpassed and the rest is a joke.

You fail to see that the admissions offices don't care and that the faculty will quietly abide by "Cs get degrees" to get those donor checks from mom and dad ... SC's campus is full of those kinds of admits...
