It is the shortcuts and demand for unnecessary certainty that got them in trouble. They could have gotten their kids in on practice teams with development office donations and actually having them play an esoteric sport.

Nice white rich 'splainin happening here. Do you have any more dismissive excuses for CRIMES that you'd like to add. 'Waaah b-b-but the rich white ppl only did fraud bec of the working class/poors financial aid!' (No mention that those folks are in debt until 45yo w/stud loans).
