Budapest where I'm from went mad for 2 child psych trends in late 80s. 1 v cuddly, the other the "don't pick up your kid if s/he cries" type. I've no. of sibling pair friends w 2-4 y age diff w one brought up in 1 trend, the other in the other, & you can tell the difference
