But there's that odd feeling of being there, seeing that excitement, and not being able to share it, and thinking "what would I think, as a kid, if I was excited and surrounded by people who are like 'meh' at the thing".
Yeah, you gotta be in it. For me, it clicked when I decided that I was not going to be “the adult,” defined in my mind as “person whose job it is to control & optimize this situation.” When I’m around kids, my only non-negotiable job is to keep them safe from serious harm

I've found that trying to be fully aware of how each situation can be "optimized" involves a habit of seeing as many potential flaws as possible. The result is a vague feeling of dissatisfaction that pervades everything.
