But there's that odd feeling of being there, seeing that excitement, and not being able to share it, and thinking "what would I think, as a kid, if I was excited and surrounded by people who are like 'meh' at the thing".

Yeah, you gotta be in it. For me, it clicked when I decided that I was not going to be “the adult,” defined in my mind as “person whose job it is to control & optimize this situation.” When I’m around kids, my only non-negotiable job is to keep them safe from serious harm

Totally get this. Sometimes I think I sound too reverent of kids, who are obviously messy & immature human beings... but I also think some pernicious societal norms constrain kids’ ability to do the incredibly fast-paced learning + practice they’re biologically compelled to do

I have the luxury of having a few small kids in my life that I am not directly responsible for and time with them fills my heart for exactly this reason. It's an instant cure.
