Mothers aged 35+ account for almost half of the births in SF (vs. 26.3% for CA overall) These geriatric pregnancies are at a higher risk for premature birth, low birth weight & birth defects, all of which are associated with lower IQs & other poor developmental outcomes

Those stats for Down syndrome, which is the most common disorder resulting from a chromosomal abnormality. Not all of them are as easy to study, which is why it's often used as a reference for understanding relative risk. Thankfully it's a screenable one, at least.
