Beyond that... I grew up with activists. They’re generally broken people, who will break others into their own shape given half a chance. The scale of Online and “everything is political” has given them that chance.
I tend to assume the whole thing is pretty organic, intimately related to the recent cultural pedestal-raising for grievance-bearers and self-flagellators, the yin + yang of neuroticism. Healthy people don't just call up strangers' workplaces based on comment threads
That's the trick: they *want* you to think it's organic. It's not. It's as stage-managed as a magic show. The point is to create an impression that a social movement is bigger and more popular and stronger than it actually is, and gain material concession by so doing.
I find the concept of fungible extremism useful. It describes obvious examples- communists who become Nazis, or vice versa- but I think it also captures the way the discontent which might have been a labor movement or a Great Awakening in a different era comes out as this today.
