I think I probably assume a greater power in certain cultural memes in shaping perception at every level than almost anyone I’ve met. All insight breaks down to pattern-matching & if the constraints are mediated by culture to the extent I think they are, heterogeneity is crucial

Sometimes I think there are failure modes that can arise from giving this point too much importance, even if it is mostly true. 1) "Weirdness" becomes a type of social signal, but is lacking in information content. 2) Insularity tends to form around these behavior clusters.

We're much better at detecting outliers than we are at detecting whatever the "true" desired signal is. The problem is that outliers are, by definition, much more separated from each other than anything else, making this type of signal extremely high variance.

Okay so totally yes. And also, there might be a level of empathy that can act as padding for socially divergent / new communication / culture w.e. - the more empathy you have, the easier it is to make sense of and understand behavior you don’t personally exhibit

Perhaps a powerful cohesive bit, in that "tribe" :) of weirdos — is that they all fundamentally appreciate their friends' nonconformity/deviation, knowledge, funny perspectives — the genuine surprise hiding playfully around each corner
