Warren proposes a childcare policy that has a mom making $15k/year delivering her baby to a childcare system funded by gov w/ providers paid comparably to teachers. Assuming this costs close to what K-12 students cost gov ($12.5k/year) why not just help her raise her own baby?pic.twitter.com/7dUSIXFCn9

I feel like the overwhelming message to parents is that somebody who “does this professionally” can parent better than you. WTF?

Notice that Rosa already had a friend looking after her baby; we don’t know the quality of Rosa’s friends or their personal circumstances, but the assumption that a state-licensed childcare facility is automatically better than a family friend is a REALLY BIG DEAL.

That seems plausible in many cases.

It reflects a technocratic presumption that is highly anti-organic. This is a common feature of socialism: burden-shifting is justified as "support," when in fact it creates new burdens and frictions.

A great deal of socialism attempts to rationalize (and so cements) industrial patterns of life. More often than not, this makes things worse.

It takes a village, Mason, and given how little people know about their neighbors these days, it's not unrealistic to suggest substituting professional services. The alternative would be something like UBI, right?

The point I’m making is that if the government can’t offer quality childcare for much less than it would cost Rosa to raise her own baby, it has a responsibility to offer her a path to do that if it has already found the funds for the childcare.

In my experience people who are trained professionally ABSOLUTELY can parent better than you. There’s this assumption that automatically because it’s your kid, then you will raise it well. That’s comically fallacious.

Also, what the hell does it even mean to assume that they can parent better than you? YOU’RE NOT THERE! That’s the point of child care.

Not that I necessarily disagree, but I always find surprising how childcare is a thing in the US while it is just the norm in Europe. And trust, you still get to grow your children (especially after long parental leave).
