I feel like the overwhelming message to parents is that somebody who “does this professionally” can parent better than you. WTF?

Notice that Rosa already had a friend looking after her baby; we don’t know the quality of Rosa’s friends or their personal circumstances, but the assumption that a state-licensed childcare facility is automatically better than a family friend is a REALLY BIG DEAL.

Right, why not just give new parents paid leave the first year? Why not give a stipend to businesses with on-site childcare facilities? I can think of a ton of better things to do than this.

FWIW I think the world would actually be a noticeably better place if childcare + parenting in the workplace were normalized, and both kids & parents knew they were physically near one another throughout the day. This sterilization of early child-rearing is super messed up

There's an effect where long-term career wages decrease when you take breaks from working -- that effect would be a reason to pay for the childcare, right? (The phenomenon of paying as much for childcare as one spouse gets in income is fairly common, afaik.)
-
I’m not convinced this applies at all when you’re a single mom working a minimum-wage job — the likelihood that you’re on any kind of career trajectory is exceedingly low

That's part of
@MattBruenig's Family Fun Pack proposal. Parents would get a choice of either free childcare or getting paid 1/4 the cost of a caregiver (because you have about a 1:4 caregiver:child ratio) to do it themselves. https://www.peoplespolicyproject.org/projects/family-fun-pack/ …Thanks. This one makes me think. It could be a dangerous move. Incentives seem misaligned. My wife is planning to stay home with our kids once we have our second this year. It's not primarily a financial decision, but this "benefit" would completely change the equation.
-
It really helps further normalize having 2 working parents and dependence on the state. It's already "normal" for our generation to think you need two incomes to survive in metropolitan areas.

This is what the
@PplPolicyProj Family Fun Pack does by paying parents if they opt out of free daycareThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
