Highly competent radicals end up not looking like radicals at all. “He’s a good kid, but he has some very funny ideas.” Too often people who make bets on a radical worldview & win big end up getting reduced to “smart, eccentric” while “savvy” gets pinned on smooth talkers

Sometimes I imagine the thinkers I follow as cult leaders, flowy garb & all. I think about the tenets of my cults, the extant priesthood & the heathens, why people join, what they want & whether they tend to get it. This is a surprisingly useful exercise for noticing bullshit

Incompetent radicals are defined functionally, if not morally, by an absence of the capacity to act alone, and seek a remedy by linking their identity to a mass movement- the specifics, a matter of chance. The competent radical possesses the capacity to act in their own right.
