There are different levels of abstraction that are be appropriate. Existence of a more concrete explanation doesn't automatically mean that the more abstract one is gibberish.

If a system has been deliberately designed to capture attention, with countless amounts of money, time, and computational resources thrown at optimization, it's likely to capture attention. How exactly? Wouldn't hurt to know, but is not by any means necessary.
