While this is certainly true, the goal of the economy should be to increase utility for all, not to massively increase utility for few. You can quibble about the specifics, but the current system is not Pareto optimal for most. So why should most participate?

Better question - how can most meaningfully participate? As long things continue in this direction, we can no longer seek self interest as self sustaining. Redistribution of wealth is the only way forward at the present moment - because:

* physical capital is expensive * human capital (education) is expensive Without access to either, it is not possible to participate in the economy for most since top wage earners take the 90% of the profits from capital.
