Because access to capital in order to produce new betterments & scale rapidly to meet demand is what allows objectively improved living standards —lighting, refrigeration, cheap food, web access, etc. Low-income US citizens live better than monarchs just a few hundred years ago

Generally agree, but people don’t compare their lives to people who lived 100s of years ago. They compare them to people they see in real life / on TV.
We have the luxury to pontificate about the rich ditzes we see on reality television because our children aren't dying before our eyes
Almost. Bad food quality. The amount of money I have to spend in the US for merely OK quality food just to reduce inflammation and lead an OK life is bonafide insane. I’d much rather be low income in Europe, where you can literally eat like an old monarch super cheap.
I’d rather be rich in Europe, too, but you don’t even need much money there. Even beauty of the buildings, parks, etc are equally distributed, and free for the rich and poor alike. Not locked away inside someone’s compoind somewhere in Palo Alto. Capitalism is broken in the US.
The comments in response to this NY Times article are very telling. First noticed a major difference when I had to spend 2 mo in Montreal, which likely has the best food quality in NA. Clean life supporting food, clean air (Europe’s failing, really), clean water, low child mortality rates, the beauty of nature, the beauty of what is woman and man made... these are the the quality basics, the t-shirts if you will, haha, of a good life. Oft overlooked factors.
