This. I got all the way through a bachelor’s in math without objection or discouragement from anyone involved. THEN contemporary feminists/feminist lit started telling me nobody thinks I can do math. 
There’s a limited practical diff between telling girls they won’t succeed because they lack something & telling girls they won’t succeed because *the world thinks* they lack something. Both anchor young people to an approval/permission-seeking mindset that would slow anyone down

My fear is that younger girls are hearing these horror stories about horror stories and may actually believe them.

Telling young girls that they can be anything they want can also be moral killing. Like Sarah Silverman said "it didn't even occur to girls that they couldn't"
