Yes. But "it takes all sorts". We need specialists; we always will. While I share your preference (& luxury!), the super high proficiency skills of experts will eventually be needed by us all. And when we do: we'll want the domain-focussed (granted *one* area is too narrow!).
Yes! ...but "the market demands people with [particular extant skill set]" is a problem the market will solve on its own, assuming the regulatory environment doesn't prevent that; if there's a case to be made for artificially doubling the supply, something has gone horribly wrong

Indeed. Artificially doubling the supply of anything - including specialists - *outside the market* (which I guess is all "artificial" can mean here) is yet another form of coercion and, hence, an evil.

(This all breaks along market/free trade/capitalism vs managed/control/socialism lines as usual. The claim it'd be in the national interest to double the number of professors absent a free market is really a claim that the needs of "society" must trump individual choice.)
