I mean this seriously: what problem does one think they're solving, here?https://twitter.com/Noahpinion/status/1088113678640009216 …

Unpopular opinion: Many of our national problems would be ameliorated if we just doubled the number of university professors.

"Many" of them, apparently. Some think this as they've been taught to think experts are best placed to solve most problems. But actually? They're only best placed to solve problems within an actual domain of expertise. Yet almost all problems are not. Not least "national" ones.

Piloting, surgery & engineering are domains of expertise. When you *want the same thing* as the surgeon, their expertise will help you get it. But in economics, often people don’t even want the same thing as the expert AND that “expert” isn’t an expert on what will happen either.

Domain experts make great teachers for domain-hoppers... I've been fortunate enough to meet many people much smarter than myself, and they're all domain-hoppers. To confine oneself to one area of study is not only to limit the problems one can solve, but the ideas one can have.

Yes. But "it takes all sorts". We need specialists; we always will. While I share your preference (& luxury!), the super high proficiency skills of experts will eventually be needed by us all. And when we do: we'll want the domain-focussed (granted *one* area is too narrow!).

(I think there can be "domain hoppers" who are "domain experts" - not mutually exclusive in the general case. But also expertise is also a matter of degree and on some topics knowing close to everything known is comparatively easy. On others, much harder to be a domain-expert.)
