To run with that (I have no strong opinion on this) how does one structure an incentive system for a job that could be "your whole career does nothing much, and thats ok?" Basic research I think requires that to be a possibility, and surmounting that is very hard.

I 100% agree, however, that academia's current approach has been "man this is hard...how about we dont fix it at all and continue on as normal?" so far, which is certainly not an acceptable path!
