We're trying to
the size/growth rate of the economy through productivity (human and capital). Having a generally higher educated population also has societal benefits. To your point, I'm not sure about the optimal # of slots & there's def room for more non-university edu.
This is kind of a non-sequitur, though? ...and to this point in particular: is there evidence that a shortage of college professors is currently leading fewer people to gain an education than otherwise would?

Which point is a non-sequitur? Regarding supply, I have seen at least one paper that implies that we're supply contrained in higher education https://www.nber.org/chapters/c10694 . I do think this benefit is second order to basic research and externalities though.
