But the diversified funding ecosystem is a main cause of paper-pushing. Both in the sense of additional bureaucracy and the need to publish as many papers as possible. Applying for funding (and making yourself fundable) takes time and effort away from research and new ideas.

Also lolwut "if we just doubled". (Heuristic: any intervention on any scale with the word "just" in it is naïve.) Who is this we? Where would the salaries come from, not to mention the offices? Where would all of the new professors come from?

To be clear, when I say "on any scale" I'm including right down to the very tiny personal stuff. "Yeah, I really need to do my homework. I should just stop procrastinating." (That "just" omits the most important piece: the reason you were "procrastinating" in the first place!)

Absolutely. More crowd funding would be ideal. More entrepreneurs and philanthropy. More of all of us having control over our resources to direct where we think is best. Way, way less coercion everywhere - including funding research.
