confession: I'm totally incapable of discerning what's weird/creepy/aggressive in a protest conflict context because I think going somewhere to get amped up on your own self-righteousness with no real outlet except shouting at people is weird/creepy/aggressive all on its own

Most successful protest movements through history have very clear objectives and plans (a march from one location to another, with specific demands. A lunch counter sit-in, aiming to end segregated seating, etc.) Are there people who protest poorly? Duh.

Also, successful protests depend on training participants in advance to make sure they are ready to remain calm under provocation. During the SNCC lunch-counter sit-ins, they practiced in advance, role-playing attacks to make sure they could remain calm:http://time.com/3638319/life-and-civil-rights-anatomy-of-a-protest-virginia-1960/ …

Protests can have concrete objectives, and sometimes they do manage to maintain enough group self-awareness to meet them; what we're seeing more of now is public tribalism as a hobby/lifestyle, available most weekends via Facebook event search

Yes. Our country is currently badly, badly broken. There are still some people who protest in an effective way, and many people who are not. But if you say "protesting doesn't make sense at all and any protest is probably just shouting at your enemies" you missed the point.

They used to have more things to do until they kept getting wiped out.
