Ever think about how strange it is that — on a purely aesthetic level — schools for children are such dismal, ugly spaces? It'd be impossible to repurpose a typical school for any other business purpose at anywhere near the local market rate; people feel icky just standing in one

See DSA. They're responsible for building code compliance for schools, which are so strict that it dictates what gets built. The school above may have narrowly escaped DSA requirements as a charter. I'm not an expert, but this might be their loophole: https://www.documents.dgs.ca.gov/dsa/pubs/PL_17-01.pdf …

Oh I correct myself - that image you show is a private school. They're not under DSA jurisdiction. P.S., Project Frog is designing/building nicer buildings that are DSA compliant, to some success.

The elementary school I attended was in a normal building, but the classrooms were like this (filled with play structures, collaborative projects constantly in various stages of construction, games, etc) because that was the teachers were empowered to make it happen.

The hallways were filled with murals and installations created by students over the years- each grade level created some significant collaborative art piece as their contribution to the school during fifth grade.

I imagine for the decision makers of school design that projecting austerity is a super useful signal

I would honestly be interested in the price point for that in comparison. Not a leading question, that could be an expensive process, but it could also be pretty cheap, with simple materials and a few tools. its hard to say.

considering the default prison hallway vibe is primarily associated with corporations and governments and stuff like the picture is associated with diy spaces and communes i dont think it's actually a question
