Ever think about how strange it is that — on a purely aesthetic level — schools for children are such dismal, ugly spaces? It'd be impossible to repurpose a typical school for any other business purpose at anywhere near the local market rate; people feel icky just standing in one

Strange? No. Disappointing? Yes. It takes money to build aesthetically pleasing spaces. It seems that schools can't afford to educate students and fund teaches let alone make the space pretty.

Equally as strange is that "school", in the conventional sense, exists at all for children; given it's oppressive restrictions on the young reptilian brain that is solely concerned with exploration of its environment; in contrast to sitting at a desk and being fed instructions
In a prosperous Detroit suburb there's a high school visible from the freeway that looks very much like a prison. It was actually designed by a prison architect. Running gag among teenagers in that part of town.

I saw some really great repurposing of schools into condos in New York City in the 90s. But I still agree with you: ugly and dismal. Why? It's awful.
How true is this? Lot of ugly businesses and offices out there, and all of the schools I attended (all public in poor rural areas) had nice green spaces, trees, clean halls, etc. The trailers used for some classrooms were pretty dismal, though, so if that trend has dominated...
It’s completely not true. And pretty much every school is more delightful than any office. I have no idea what the OP is thinking.
