I lost a group of friends I’d known for 15+ years over this sort of thing; a family member who’s an activist had the same thing happen to them 10 years ago. There’s a growing mainstreaming of absolutist subcultural norms, an insistence that everyone live on a war footing.

The fascist/authoritarian streak is built into our brainstem, regardless of policy perspectives. Left-authoritarianism is particularly exacerbated by the performative nature of our current set of "social media" tools. There is no space for safe discourse, it's always performance.
