If it’s a real conversation, the goals “survive and thrive in this social context” and “get feedback on ideas that may or may not be absolutely terrible” coexist peacefully rather than tearing each other limb from limb

I agree. Though I would argue my definition of smart overlaps quite a lot with someone who you can have a real conversation with.

Genuine curiosity leads to openness. "Smart" and "interesting" don't. Smart & Interesting = f(x). Curiosity = f'(x). So much more important for judging a person's future potential.

I guess because the idea of a conversation is to share things, learn stuff, and explore the world, even if you can find a mind that has something to offer, much 'dialogue' these days is about signaling and defending territory.
