the reasonableness of biking in a city is something that can't be explained. Just gotta do it and realize that it's no big deal

Sry, but navigating the "logistics" of public transit should be a prerequisite for living in a city. I'm sure you use G Maps to get around in yr car, if you click that ltl bus icon it will give you step by step inst for pub trans...B honest, there's an element of laziness here...
-
No. I've had so many challenges figuring out bus routes that I don't even really consider them a viable option anymore. I'm glad it's intuitive for you, and I can live with the possibility that you think I'm a moron.

As a member of the class you refer to, I appreciate the call for understanding, but I don't think you're right on the degree of perceived difficulty of transit schedules. It's hard only for those without pocket computers. Instead, I think there are bigger objections.
-
Perceived safety, the experience of being in a dirty station, the experience of being on a crowded train, not having to wait... These are the things I hear car people talk about as reasons to avoid transit, not the difficulty of navigating (though that does play a smaller role).

Also: kids. I’ve lived in NYC my entire adult life and it never occurred to me how challenging it would be to navigate public transit with kids until I had two of my own. “Very” is the answer. Very.

I feel like we’re extra-boned in SF because both (a) bikers here are completely insane and disobey all laws, and (b) cars hate bikers here and put them at mortal risk constantly. Coming from Seattle both of these were a huge shock.
-
It’s hard to imagine anyone in this city thinking, “We need more bikes” any more than they’d think, “We need more skateboarders skating down the middle of the street holding onto our fenders.” (Me, I love biking, I wish it WERE safe here.)

I’ve lived in both cultures—I’ve even lived in NYC w a car—but grew up a transit rider. I see what you mean—especially when I’m in a foreign city riding an unfamiliar metro. Curious: Are you a good driver?
-
I don't know if I'm a *good* driver, but I'm a very comfortable driver. I grew up in an extremely rural area and drove absolutely everywhere until I moved to NYC in my early 20s.
