Did all of these medical professionals really believe that babies felt no pain? How confident were they? Did they think about it often? How could they bring themselves to cut into tiny children, fully awake but paralyzed by muscle relaxants? Do they feel any guilt *now*?

Sometimes it seems utterly insane to me that educational professionals can look at a typical classroom and think "yes, this is what a childhood ought to be." But it's not insane. It's a standard feature of humans to be this recklessly unobservant when it suits you.

umm, "kinda lefty"? I'm sure you know where this babies-feeling-pain discussion will lead you... In the Bay Area, this is tar and feather material. Virtue signal around this topic at your earliest opportunity.

Where does it lead? I'm not sure and curious

This is absolutely shocking. What were they thinking? But people have generally believed that children and animals cannot feel pain. Racists used to believe Africans felt less pain than Europeans too

“Up to this time, babies were typically given a form of curare to paralyze their muscles for surgery, making it impossible for them to lift a finger or make a sound of protest.” Wow...

Could that be the reason why some generations are more used to pain in childhood than others. I know they won't remember but pain causes changes to brain .

“Physicians advocated withholding anesthetic or analgesic agents from infants claiming that some infants undergoing surgery are often so unstable that the risk of an anesthetic agent is too great to justify the possible benefit of pain relief.” http://www.cirp.org/library/pain/aap/ …

A similar thought is dreams. AFAIK no one is researching how to make us dream less, but suffering in dreams seems just as bad as regular suffering, it just doesn’t affect our memory the same way.
