Looking at the great films over the decades, it's kind of incredible how rapidly we've improved every aspect of audiovisual storytelling

Its is so difficult to watch movies like Chinatown. Our expectations of speed and camera work + dialogue are destroying history

I realized this recently when re-watching one of my favorite movies (Idiocracy) which felt painfully out-of-date despite coming out < 15y ago. Would love to see a Netflix re-make.

It seems like narratives that can be more flexibly consumed are taking over before we unlock the key for VR storytelling. Consider vine, snapchat, YT, instagram, and of course streaming services that freed TV from the creative constraints of broadcast ad-bundling and formatting.

It's an exciting time to be a gamer. VR is super immature, but video games are really starting to show what interactivity can bring to a story. See Papers Please, One Shot, and Brothers: a Tale of two Sons for some of my favorite examples.

As a counterpoint, I dread the same thing. To the extent that I enjoy video games, it’s precisely because they’re predictable, simple, straightforward relaxation. A conversion to Challenging Art makes them, frankly, work; not bad, but suited to an entirely different purpose.

OTOH, sometimes you see an older movie & realize later blockbusters are much more incremental than they seem – eg Keaton's 'The General' (1926) was practically Die-Hard-On-A-Train, 62 years *before* 'Die Hard'https://en.wivipedia.org/wiki/The_General_(1926_film) …
