if you take this position, the notion of creating large buckets with semi-descriptive labels (e.g. bipolar) becomes ridiculous and destructive, especially if you're "diagnosed" as a child

Shouldn't be pushing this
but @webdevMason &@primalpoly reminded me of the high IQ / genetic diseases trade-off part of this: http://slatestarcodex.com/2017/05/26/the-atomic-bomb-considered-as-hungarian-high-school-science-fair-project/ … - when SA discusses Ashkenazi Jews .... -

That's awesome, I talk about this often, current science, ironically, doesn't normally consider or appreciate possible evolutionary mental furtherance. The challenge to their 'standards' or basis of thought is too uncomfortable (?).

Like Carl Jung helped release the mentality disabled from prison, he was on to something.. There can't only be 'normal' and 'disabled' or 'gifted' then 'genius'. We can't imagine they all function the same as acceptable.

Reminds me of this excellent episode of
@Rspodcast http://rationallyspeakingpodcast.org/show/rs99-judith-schlesinger-exposes-the-myth-of-the-mad-genius.html … Back when good ol'@mpigliucci was still around. -
Good 'ol Pigliucci *is* still around, just doing other things... ;-)

"mental illness" is a pretty broad category. I can more easily imagine certain types of mental illness as a *result* of greater creativity/insights. Think about being Cassandra of greek myths. You'd go bonkers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra
