It might seem like a new oddity but it's isomorphic to existing telephone taxes, up against VoIP/Skype back in the day.

Difference here I think is, the network effects w/the existing PSTN isn't nearly as strong: If your friends are on a messaging app, you can easily switch/have multiple apps.

One would think that taxing people for exchanging goods and services with each other would also be insane, but we do that at very high rates (income taxes). Why not tax the exchange of words also?
