This is the heart of my criticism of the education system; it leaves dreamers so devoid of essential skills & up-to-date tool-use that they can't laugh off nihilism or anarchy, even as they dream. The laurels the system's determined to rest on will soon be burnt, & it's our loss

I don't want to be a doomsday prophet. Kids & young adults need only be enabled. The first step, as their guardians, is getting used to saying "I don't know." The second is freeing (+ encouraging!) them to find the answers we don't have — with trust, and without supervision

The internet of my youth — the web of the 90s/early 00s — was still a novelty, a "computer thing." Parents/mentors didn't know to fear it, so they inadvertently freed us to explore it. The wild west has civilized; the default is to consume. The channels are narrow for producers.

And their minds are being deeply conditioned by zeitgeist. Conditioned thinking doesnt usually go away by itself. We luckies have inherited or discovered structure & direction in face of real uncertainty which is debilitating w no guiding lights.

Unfortunately, a crisis may prove necessary to shake off this new existential angst. The * common enemy approach isn't working for either side so unfortunately, a sacrificial scapegoat is plausible as a * uniter* and provider of a purpose, however deranged.

History, for me, is the greatest source of proper optimism. People of the past faced really adverse circumstances and still found ways to leave the world better than they found it. Whatever today's challenges, that makes me feel that we have no excuse but to aspire to do the same

The landscape is a little bit grayer than that. It's not just The Optimists Who Own Craftsmanship And Defend It vs The Pessimists With Pitchforks. I can see why one would think that it was like that, but you're not doing justice to critical positions there. Not all are reductive.

"try stuff!" and "build something cool!" when it "doesn't seem to fit the day's aggregate aesthetic" is generally attributed as a characteristic of... wait for it... leadership!

"Leadership" is an utterly ruined term

Well, there are different ways to think about the idea of optimism. (via

I love Deustsh's use of the word and maybe I'm biased, but I call that as close to an objective truth that I know of. The point is that things ( voodoo for example) are usually called supernatural also. To not have studied it would have been a big mistake.
