I can't believe some of the code I see coming from people who hold CS master's degrees. Practical, directed experience in actually deploying applications is a really great solution.

I view university as a quest for knowledge - yes there should be more attractive trade-school type training for development work but I went to uni as a right of passage (lucky that didn't cost me an arm and a leg) and a way to learn more about the world - not just to get a job

You obviously haven't looked at the structure of Lambda School if you think it's a 10 week crash course that only covers tools and templates.
