If 90% of the arguments against something are stupid and/or ethically disastrous, it's easy to underweight the 10% that are extraordinarily important. Human gene editing might be the quintessential example of this https://twitter.com/asteroid_saku/status/1069315908793847809 …

I think the ppl are more disturbed about Germline gene editing & gene drives than they are about Gene editing. I have no problem with editing out a disease from someone who asked for it. It gets real shady when you wana do it to embryos/ pass down to generations

The political problem is that without being *very* concrete the 10% will be bunched with the 90% and either used to support opposites of what you want or discounted as silly. (Eg some journo hilariously called Musk a Luddite due to some of his AI statements)

Taleb is making vague noises in this direction but I’m pretty sure he’s conflating aesthetic preference with risk here. I get how GMO crops can be risky, with CRISPR we have to worry more about creating suffering in the subject ...

This is one of the reasons I have a hard time taking our politics seriously. There isn’t a debate I’ve seen that even remotely deals with questions on this scale. So many storms on the horizon, and our leaders seem utterly blind to them.

My guess is an increase in average intelligence is good for reducing other existential risks (or at least, good for expanding to the stars before extinction), but I don't have strong priors.

Other than people who face adverse reactions what are the important negative directions? So far I've seen people worrying about either Eloi/Morlock or Stargate-Asgard type scenarios. Nothing that makes me think humanity would be better off if IRBs slowed down progress even more.
