Wouldn’t you, perhaps in an even idealistic way, prefer an education system where college isn’t entirely about landing an in demand job? I would argue for greater emphasis on trade schools if kids want job skills over, I don’t know... reading Plato, or taking calc.
I would prefer an education system in which people have a very good understanding about what they're buying and how much they're going to have to pay for it in advance, and then that's exactly what happens

It would be hard for me to disagree with you on that. Though most students at the typical college age have no idea what they’re buying or what to look for in a college education, but they have some idea as to the cost.

My only real point here is that I think when some say “Y is the reason for college” outside of increasing job market prospects, I tend to lean on the side of Y, particularly when it’s just to expand personal knowledge.
