Wouldn’t you, perhaps in an even idealistic way, prefer an education system where college isn’t entirely about landing an in demand job? I would argue for greater emphasis on trade schools if kids want job skills over, I don’t know... reading Plato, or taking calc.

I would prefer an education system in which people have a very good understanding about what they're buying and how much they're going to have to pay for it in advance, and then that's exactly what happens

That is half the critiques (the dumb ones), but the other half is "college is about jobs, but not job skills - yet somehow it helps you get jobs". The Y there is often equally vague, but much more real.

1980’s: If college is 15k it’s fine if it includes humanities, because that benefits society. 2018: If college is 120k, couldn’t we just cut humanities to make it 30k, and at least we’ll learning employable skills so we can not be in debt for the rest of our lives.

Are they saying (1) college doesn’t help people get jobs (2) that its purpose *shouldnt* be about getting jobs, or (3) that college isn’t *only/mainly* about getting jobs. Because the evidence is pretty clear for (1) that it helps people get jobs.
