The fertility justification isn't depicted as paramount in Gilead (many of the would-be fathers are themselves infertile, a dying baby is nearly denied medical treatment because the available expert is a woman, and so on). I wish they'd bitten that bullet & followed where it led
IMO, the show would've been even creepier (+ more interesting) if Gilead had been less a hardcore religious right strawman & more a good-faith answer to the question "what happens if you're willing to go all the way to save humanity & the available options all look *really* bad?"

Battlestar Galactica had a fantastic episode about how abortion policy would have to be changed to deal with existential risk. Much more credible/compelling.
