I believe that some baseline welfare state is necessary to make people comfortable w having families despite the unavoidable volatility of a continuously evolving economy Unfortunately (-sigh-) there's not empirical support for this? But it would be SO convenient to not be wrong
It's an an incredibly obvious and sensible narrative that unfortunately explains nothing we actually see

Yeah, rational actors would love a safety net, no? I know I would. You never know when things in life are going to hell. You don’t want children to suffer. Ever. Worse, too many sociopaths target poor kids and make their already difficult lives much more painful.

Anyway, France does it best by far: https://www.swisslife.com/en/hub/why-having-children-is-so-attractive-in-France.html … I really love reading about the incentives in France. In 2018, seems like the best place to start a family. And of course the food is second to one. Excellent for kid’s epigenetic expression, to boot!
