Funding agencies and hiring committees pay people to look like they're making progress, instead of paying for progress (after debating which problems are important to solve.) And it's much easier to look like you're making progress.

On the other hand, it isn't any fun merely to look like you're making progress. So today most young scientists are told that suffering is part of their training -- they will be "rewarded" by the outward appearance of success, even though that's not what they enjoy going in.
