I’d argue something stronger — that it normalizes the idea of homicide, that there’s a good chance that someone will show up one day & try to kill you. It might be a fellow student, someone you see every day. This is pure paranoia priming.

I like surveys like this from you and
@devonzuegel because you both basically have 100% contrarian followers -
No they don't.

I wonder how the same people would rate the net benefits of fire drills. Also, This American Life #659 has a crazy story on this: Teachers at Stoneman Douglas had *unannounced* active shooter drills and some teachers thought the real one was just a drill.
-
Those drills can be kinda fucked up. An instructor would fire off blanks in the hallway. One entered a teacher’s room, telling her she’d be dead (because she didn’t lock her door like she was supposed to). She thought he was a real gunman and she was about to get shot.

Really interested to hear the arguments against doing drills? Seems like a “hope for the best, prepare for the worst” situation. Chances of surviving a shooting would go up a lot if you knew exactly what to do, where to go, etc.
-
The chances of an individual student ever being involved in a situation like this is tiny. Have to weigh that against the psychological cost of instilling irrational fear.

I think it probably varies a lot by age. BIG NEGATIVE for younger kids. Probably not that big a deal by the time high school rolls around (probably instill even more cynicism. exercise to the reader if that is a plus or minus).

I grew up in a gun culture. Hunted regularly. Lived in a home with over 50 guns stored in a gun case. That any child has to endure an “active shooter drill” angers/saddens/stuns me. Who hunts children? W.....T......F

It depends on whether if the drill is reality based and effective.
